Christian Gerber, journaliste pour la radio parisienne Radio Plus, est en reportage en Amérique du Sud à la recherche d'un chef rebelle caché dans la jungle. Après négociations, il obtient une interview de ce dernier, mais voit son matériel confisqué par celui-ci. Alors qu'il se fait allègrement doubler par des reporters sans scrupules qui fournissent des reportages bidons, il revient à Paris bien décidé à se venger et à bousculer le train-train de sa radio, dont la ligne éditoriale a été axée sur Dieu et la religion, en accusant ses confrères en direct lors de l'édition de midi. Ayant évité in extremis le licenciement, il est mis sur une voie de garage et nommé « superviseur des émissions artistiques ». Après avoir écrit des chansons humoristiques sur Jésus-Christ et tourné en dérision sa radio ainsi que son directeur Plantier, il est finalement licencié. Pourtant, à la demande du président Louis-Marcel Thulle qui vient de licencier Plantier, officiellement pour cause de mauvais programmes, mais en réalité parce qu'il est meilleur que lui dans le maniement d'un gadget de l'époque, Gerber est réintégré et obtient carte blanche sur la ligne éditoriale. Il en profite pour divulguer des vérités et oser toutes les provocations. Le succès est immédiat mais, pendant ce temps, la chancellerie, le patronat et les syndicats s'inquiètent de la tournure que prend la station Radio Plus, et le succès monte dangereusement à la tête des collaborateurs de Gerber...
